Andrea von Ramm (1928-1999)
Andrea von Ramm was a friend and colleague. She was an extraordinarily talented musician and thinker. Those of us who were lucky enough to know and work with her knew her tireless excitement, her drive toward excellence, and her razor-sharp wit. In her later years, I collaborated with Andrea on the composition of a "futuristic musical comedy" called The Ants as well as on the oratorio Virus Cosmos.
I first worked with her as a performer in the 1980's under the auspices of a grant from the Noah Greenberg Society which rewarded excellence in the study and performance of early music. The Boston Renaissance Ensemble, of which I was founding member, used this grant to do a series of concerts with Andrea who was already well-known in early music circles because of her work with the Studio der Frühen Musik.
The selection below, Io son l’ocel [“I am a bird”] comes from a live performance recorded in Jordan Hall, Boston on November 24, 1986.
